Free breakfast clubs programme

About the programme

The government is committed to delivering on its pledge to provide a free breakfast club in every state-funded school with primary-aged children. The free breakfast clubs programme will support the government's aims of giving every pupil regardless of their background the best start in life (opens in new tab), breaking down barriers to every child achieving and thriving (opens in new tab) at school and in later life, by ensuring they are ready to learn, as well as supporting families with cost of living, and tackling poverty.

Schools and trusts engaged on the programme must deliver a breakfast club that is:

  • open to all pupils on roll in Reception to Year 6
  • at least 30 minutes in duration, held immediately before the start of each compulsory school day
  • free and accessible
  • providing breakfasts that meet the School Food Standards for England
  • located on, or in the vicinity of, the school site

By taking part in the programme, schools will be giving their pupils access to a strong start to their day that will set them up to learn.

In exchange, schools will receive funding to cover food, staffing, and delivery costs of running their club. Mainstream schools will receive:

  • A £1000 start-up grant for equipment and materials you need to run your club
  • £25 per day to cover fixed costs, no matter how many pupils attend
  • £1 per pupil per day who attends

Further details are available for mainstream school funding (opens in new tab) and special school funding (opens in new tab).
